Founded in 1791

Nederburg begins in 1791, when the German settler Philippus Wolvaart bought 49 hectares in the Paarl valley and named them Nederburgh, after the Dutch East India Company commissioner Sebastian Cornelis Nederburgh. The 'h' was dropped later, leaving Nederburg. The house Wolvaart completed in 1800 — thatched and gabled, in the Cape Dutch manner — is a national monument today: yellowwood shutters, beams and doors, Batavian floor tiles. It gives the Manor House range its name. The turning point came in 1956, when the young German winemaker Günter Brözel arrived. He stayed 33 years. In 1969 he made Edelkeur, South Africa's first noble late harvest wine, and in 1975 it opened the first Nederburg Auction — still the event around which the South African wine year arranges itself.
