Nederburg's story begins in 1791, when the German settler Philippus Wolvaart bought 49 hectares in the Paarl valley and named them Nederburgh, after Sebastiaan Cornelis Nederburgh, commissioner of the Dutch East India Company. The "h" fell away later and Nederburg remained. The house Wolvaart completed in 1800 — Cape Dutch, thatched and gabled — is a national monument today: yellowwood shutters, beams and doors, floors of Batavian tile. It gives the Manor House range its name. The turning point came in 1956, when the young German oenologist Günter Brözel arrived at the cellar. He stayed 33 years. In 1969 he created Edelkeur, the first South African wine from nobly rotted grapes, and in 1975 it opened the first Nederburg Auction, still the event around which the South African wine year arranges itself.
