Yalumba

Barossa · Eden Valley · Australia

Founded in 1849

Samuel Smith was a brewer from Dorset. In 1847 he boarded the ship China with his family, and in 1849 he planted a vineyard on a patch of land near Angaston in the Barossa and called it Yalumba. The winery is in the hands of the same family today — the oldest family-owned winery in Australia. Two things set it apart from its neighbours. Its own vine nursery, established in the 1970s and now among the largest in Australia, sends vines to winemakers across the country. And its own on-site cooperage, unique in an Australian winery: the barrels its wines age in are made in the yard. Over 175 years the house has acquired the habit of not hurrying. Each year The Signature carries the name of a person whose work is part of the winery's story — not a label, a dedication. Our catalogue carries Samuel's Collection, The Signature and The Caley.
