The Languedoc is France's great southern coastline of vines, an arc running from the Rhône to the Spanish border, where the Mediterranean, the garrigue scrubland and the dry winds shape the wines. Our selection from the region comes not from a single estate but from several appellations and growers' cellars, chosen with one brief: honest, clearly made everyday wine at a sensible price. The whites — Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino and Picpoul de Pinet from vineyards beside the Thau lagoon — lean on freshness and a saline edge; the reds, from Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, carry the warmth of the south and the herbal note of the garrigue. This is France without ceremony — wine for tables that gather often.
