Before there were vineyards in every valley north of San Francisco, before Napa and Sonoma became household names, before there was wine in California at all, there was Buena Vista. Founded in 1857, with lands stretching from Sonoma to Napa, Buena Vista was California's first premium winery, and its history is as colorful as it is proud. Today the legend has been reborn under the vision of Jean-Charles Boisset. Just outside the town of Sonoma, the original winery is now a California Historical Landmark and home to the winery and its visitor center. Château Buena Vista, in the heart of downtown Napa, is the realization of a dream to restore the winery's presence in Napa Valley. Agoston Haraszthy, the winery's founder, was an eccentric count with a genuine devotion to California wine. Surrounded by his own intrigues and in political exile, the Count emigrated from Hungary in 1842 in search of opportunity and freedom in the booming West. Where others sought gold in the hills of Northern California, Haraszthy sought "purple gold" — the ideal terroir for exceptional wine. He settled in Sonoma, the birthplace of California and capital of the short-lived California Republic, where he founded the Buena Vista winery in 1857. A dedicated viticulturist, innovator, respected author and shrewd businessman, the Count is considered the most ardent champion of viticulture in California. Despite his sudden death in 1869 in a crocodile-infested river in the jungles of Nicaragua, and through the trials of the Great Depression, Prohibition and phylloxera, his beloved Buena Vista not only endured but prospered. Boisset Family Estates, a family with true affection and respect for Buena Vista, is the current owner, committed to carrying forward the vision and legacy first created by the Count 150 years ago.
