The winery dates back to 1551, making it the oldest in Spain. In 1659 Anna Codorníu married the winegrower Miquel Raventós. The house produced still wines and navigated the complications of history successfully. Later, in 1872, Josep Raventós created Spain's first bottle of cava made by the classic method. In 1885 Manuel Raventós gave a decisive push to cava and to Codorníu as a leading producer. Ten years later, in 1895, the construction of a winery at Sant Sadurní was planned. The architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch was responsible for its design and construction — alongside Gaudí, he was one of the leading figures of the great Catalan Modernista school of architecture. In 1898 a competition was held for a Modernista poster to advertise Codorníu, drawing great artists of the Catalan avant-garde and making Codorníu a true pioneer in advertising. Later, in 1959, the first Codorníu television commercial was broadcast. The new winery was completed in 1915, and in 1976 the building was recognized as a jewel of Catalan Art Nouveau architecture and declared a national historic monument. In 1984 Anna de Codorníu made history as the first cava under the brand made from Chardonnay. The first rosé cava made from Pinot Noir followed in 2002, while the first Blanc de Noirs cava made from Pinot Noir — Reina Ma Cristina — reached the market in 2010. Later, in 2017, the house created a line of prestige cava cuvées under the name Ars Collecta. In 2017 the vineyards were honoured with the Paraje Calificado ("qualified site") designation, thanks to the exceptional quality of the soil. Then, in 2020, a conversion to organic viticulture began, completed in 2024. All told, more than 450 years of history and experience surround Codorníu.
