The history of Marqués de Murrieta is also the history of Rioja as a wine region. Applying techniques learned in Bordeaux, Don Luciano Murrieta made the first Rioja wine in 1852, with the intention of turning it into a tradition. Don Luciano's vision was clear from the outset: to create a quality Rioja wine with great ageing potential and to begin exporting it beyond Spain. He shipped his first vintage — the legendary 1852 — to countries including Mexico and Cuba, making it the first quality Rioja wine ever exported. At the Castillo, noble materials merge seamlessly with the latest technology, transforming one of the oldest industrial buildings in Europe into a benchmark of modernity and balance. In recognition of its historical significance for the world of wine, its heritage and its architecture, Castillo de Ygay — still the headquarters of Marqués de Murrieta — was declared a museum in 2019. Marqués de Murrieta Estates and Wines has been led since 1983 by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family, known for their professionalism and daily commitment to everything they undertake. The Cebrián-Sagarriga heirs, proud of their Galician roots, remember their parents every day with love and gratitude: "Our parents began a great family and corporate project, which we strive to continue with the same strength and enthusiasm. They passed on to us the values of a close-knit family and showed us the meaning of daily effort and sacrifice. They taught us to respect the past without neglecting the future, always looking ahead. They gave us their faith, their confidence, their love of life and of everyone around us, their generosity and, in essence, their enchanting way of living." — Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell. After six years of work, the new winery now stands proudly beside Castillo de Ygay. The major renovation of Marqués de Murrieta was crowned in 2021 with the opening of new winemaking facilities: a complex of buildings covering more than 25,000 square metres, built next to the Castillo. Equipped with the latest technology, it is considered one of the most advanced wineries in the world. More than 50,000 square metres of gardens create a charming, idyllic setting around the winery. Marqués de Murrieta is now fully modernised while remaining true to its roots and identity, ready to continue producing wines celebrated around the world. Marqués de Murrieta is a way of life that begins with the land and with every grape they share with the world through a glass of wine. They are a family and a professional team with a single goal: to keep their traditions alive and to believe in themselves and in quality, in the pursuit of excellence. They work with their hands, minds and hearts, applying the most advanced technology, always in harmony with their history. Marqués de Murrieta continues to evolve with new, forward-looking ideas that allow it to adapt to new times, new consumers and their aspirations — with respect for the dignity of its vineyards, every bunch of grapes, every bottle and every glass of wine, in every part of the world where it is present. Marqués de Murrieta is the proud owner of Pazo de Barrantes. The origins of Pazo de Barrantes date back to the early 16th century, and the estate has been linked to the Cebrián-Sagarriga family ever since. It is a traditional Galician manor built of stone, a witness to the most important chapters of Galicia's history. Vicente Cebrián-Sagarriga, 10th Count of Creixell and father of the current owners, built the winery beside the manor in 1991 and began producing wine with the same philosophy as at Marqués de Murrieta: to create estate wines that express the character and personality of the terroir from which they come.
