The winery was founded in 1896 by Eugenio Collavini, who sold his wines locally. In 1937 Eugenio's son Giovanni took over its management — the difficult years of trial spanning the First and Second World Wars. Friuli, part of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, lies in northeastern Italy, bordered by the Alps to the north and reaching the Slovenian border to the east. Although the area once supplied wine to many Roman legions, its modern wine history is comparatively young for Italy: the industry restarted years after the Second World War, as part of the population returned. Collavini is one of the region's oldest wineries, having weathered the turbulent history of this corner of Italy. Unlike Italy's other wine regions, Friuli is known for growing both native varieties — Friulano and Ribolla Gialla — and international ones such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Collio, a subzone of Friuli, is one of the world's best-known regions for high-quality white wines. The winery's modern history began in 1959, when Manlio took charge, bringing innovative changes to regional winemaking and turning Collavini into an internationally recognized brand. Today the winery is run by Manlio as president, Giovanni as managing director and Luigi as sales director. Collavini's premium and super-premium wines are sold in more than 40 countries worldwide. Collavini is also the proud owner of the region's largest and oldest sparkling wine facility, with over 50 years of experience and a patented method for producing sparkling Ribolla Gialla — the Metodo Collavini. In doing so, Collavini has entirely rediscovered Ribolla Gialla, the oldest variety grown in the region. The winery farms 170 hectares of vineyards, with care for the land and the local farmers as its first priority and a commitment to minimal environmental impact: no pesticides are used in the vineyards, and 70% of the winery's electricity needs are met by solar panels. Dedication, love of the land and the relentless pursuit of high quality standards — these are the three pillars on which the Collavini family tradition rests.
