Ramos Pinto was founded in 1880 by the brothers Adriano and António, opening a new era of quality winemaking in the Douro. Today Adriano and António's descendants, Jorge and Ana Rosas, carry that pioneering spirit forward in the pursuit of the highest quality in the Douro, as chief executive and master blender respectively. Balancing innovation with respect for tradition, the house has grown ever stronger and is today a reference point for quality wines and port in the Douro. Ramos Pinto makes its wines exclusively from grapes grown on its own four estates, having understood early on that the quality of its wine depends on the Douro's terroir, and having full control of — and deep knowledge of — its land. Quinta do Bom Retiro and Quinta da Urtiga lie in the Cima Corgo, while Quinta dos Bons Ares and Quinta de Ervamoira are in the Douro Superior — 286 hectares planted with vines in all. Grapes from Ervamoira bring structure and depth of fruit, while Bom Retiro and Urtiga lend complexity and elegance to the blends. It is this knowledge of the Douro's terroirs, combined with innovative viticulture, a strict production policy and the selection of only the finest grape varieties, that yields world-class Tawnies, Vintage ports worthy of their age, and some of the Douro's highest-quality wines. Ramos Pinto's long and remarkable history grew richer still in 1990, when the house became part of the Louis Roederer family, who share its family story, its focus on quality and its investment in the future. With an eye on that future, Ramos Pinto is working to implement organic farming and increase biodiversity in its vineyards, deepening its bond with nature and continuing its legacy of producing wines of the highest quality.
