With roots in Germany, Russia and, later, Dakota, the family settled in Lodi, California, where they first grew watermelons. Realizing that the soil and climate were excellent for grapes, they began planting Zinfandel and other varieties — and for more than a hundred years now the family has worked this land and produced high-quality fruit. Zinfandel was among the first varieties planted in the Lodi appellation, though it is popular in other parts of California as well. Today the sixth generation of the family is devoted to winemaking. Steve and Lori Felten, fifth-generation growers in the Lodi area, continue the tradition of cultivating the old-vine Zinfandel their ancestors planted in the early 1900s. Barry Gnekow has been the winemaker from the very beginning. A UC Davis graduate with more than 25 years of winemaking experience, Barry has a rare gift for carrying the best of the vineyard into the winery, year after year, producing Klinker Brick's distinctive wines.
